This section gives a few links to some useful tools all home based computer users should consider.

CCleaner – a free program to clean all junk files from your PC. Depending on your PC use we recommend running this program once every 2 weeks.  

AVG Anti-Virus – a free Anti-virus / Anti-spyware program which gives quite a good level of security for general home based internet users.  

Avast Anti-Virus – another free Anti-virus / Anti-Spyware program which is a little less intensive on system resources. Better for slower machines running on minimal amounts of RAM. Remember to register for your free registration key every 12 months.  

Microsoft Security Essentials – a free anti-virus / Anti-spyware / Malware protection suite.  

Spybot search & destroy – a very good spyware scanner and cleaner, and once again, its free.  

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware – a very good Anti-Malware scanner. Ideal for removing some of the more stubborn infections other scanners don’t pick up.  

Open Office – A very good free alternative to Microsoft Office 2003 for those who cannot afford the original Microsoft prices.  

VPN’s (Virtual Private Networks)

Anchor Free’s Hotspot Shield – A free VPN that will encrypt your Internet activity while using wifi hotspots or unsecured wireless networks. A good choice for most but can be very slow at times due to the number of users it has. Pros: its Free and does the job  -  Cons: There is a limit to the bandwith you can use with it (3GB over 30 days I think) and there is also the annoying ads that keep popping up from time to time on the banner
